About Soccer Review (Football League Review)
The Official Journal of the Football League
If you went to football matches from the late sixties and through to the mid seventies you will remember the insert from the Football League that came inside your clubs match day programme. It started in August 1965 and only appeared in some clubs programmes originally called the Soccer Review. It was printed by Sport and Screen Productions in Leicester and was edited by Harry Brown.
The Football League Review was published by the Football League between 1965 and the mid 1970's. Its' original purpose was to give clubs an interesting insert to help 'fill out' their own match programmes while obviously promoting the Football League's corporate messages of the time.
It qualifies as a magazine in its own right as it was always available either by post or from your newsagent right from launch.
The Football League Review went through various name changes
1965/66 = Soccer Review
1966/67 to 1971/72 = Football League Review
1972/73 to 1974/75 = League Football
By the mid 1970's, football programmes were beginning to evolve towards the magazine-type issues we have today, so the need for such a supplement reduced as clubs developed their own styles.
Issues from 1965/6 (Soccer Review) and 1966/7, the magazines first as the Football League Review are scarcer, as fewer clubs were using the magazine in those seasons.
A note about team photographs. For those buyers interested in the full page, often centre page colour team photographs of the magazine from the 1967/8 season onwards, please note that the team photographs in the 1965/6 and 1966/7 season's editions were quarter page and b/w.
Also a note about staples. There were 3 scenarios;
1. Some issues had their own staples and were inserted inside their host programme.
2. Some issues had their own staples but were also attached to the host programme with another staple or set of staples. When removed, the original holes from the host programmes staple(s) obviously remained.
3. Some issues were attached to the host programme using the host programme's staples. When removed, the original holes from the host programme obviously remained.
