THE ILLUSTRATED BOOK OF PATIENCE GAMES, Seventh EDITION IN ENGLISH, 1910

HOFFMANN, Professor. The Illustrated Book of Patience Games. London: George Routledge & Sons, 1892. Octavo, original pictorial blue-green cloth gilt, beveled edges.
Fraying to top of spine.

Early compilation of solitaire card games, copiously illustrated in red and black.

Although barrister Angelo John Lewis usually wrote conjuring handbooks under his pseudonym “Professor Lewis Hoffmann,” this volume—one of the earliest in English on the subject—outlines several variations of solitaire, including “Royal Marriage,” “The Cotillion,” “Rouge et Noir,” “The Windmill” and “Sympathy.” First published in Germany as Illustriertes Buch der Patiencen, circa 1875.

Last few pages have a stain to them.

Interior generally clean. Boards with light rubbing to spine ends and extremities, slight soiling and minor abrasions, gilt bright. A near-fine copy.
