The Referee newspaper was founded in 1877 as a weekly publication primarily covering sports news. Gradually increasing the football content as the newly formed Football League gained in popularity. It was the first or one of the first to publish football results from as early 1877.

The content had nothing to do with the refereeing profession. It ran with this original name until 1928.At that point it changed it's publication day and became "The Sunday Referee". In the 1930s, considerable money was invested in an attempt to compete with the leading Sunday newspapers, and circulation reached 400,000, but in 1939 it was merged with the Sunday Chronicle..
