Match of the Day "The first and last word on football every Thursday"

Launched on the 15th August 1996 this is the first incarnation of this magazine which back then was targeted at adults. It closed in May 2001 after five years when the BBC temporarily lost the rights to Premier League football highlights

It is interesting that the BBC decided to relaunch the failed magazine on March the 4th 2008 , but this time aimed at 8- to 14-year-olds and included a football skills guide alongside match information, news and gossip.

It was a congested market with Match,Kick and Shoot already competing for the childrens football market.It led to the closing of Shoot within two months of MOTD launching.
